Major Tom (Welcome Home) is both an homage and a statement. It's a testament to the great works that came before - David Bowie’s eponymous astronaut lost in space, and further told by Peter Schilling. It’s also a reflection by Dettlas on the difficulties those who have seen so much have in understanding our modern, myopic world.
This piece had been rattling around in Asif’s mind for a while, but like many of the Detlas collaborative works, it took engaging in a musical conversation, with a bit of trial and error, to polish this synth-pop tribute into shape. Using authentic NASA samples, from astronauts to satellites, again, this is a true collaboration between Vox Humanic and BandXUSA.
Verse 1 Lost in the Heavens for a long long time And I never felt so relieved I found myself praying all in rhyme Discoveries were to believe Back to the Earth and I fall again Has the World gone through much change? I listen for all those words of praise As their chants all seem so strange… And they cry (refrain)
Refrain Welcome, Welcome, Welcome Home! Back from out, To where you’re from Welcome, Welcome, Welcome Home! Back to Earth Our Major Tom
Verse 2 Back on the Earth and I kiss the ground My legs feel light and thin The weight feels so strong, air is filled with sound The light makes my head spin No more routine I can have my choice, I make my next best move Speech is a joy, I can use my voice. Just like my fans who groove And they chant (refrain)
Verse 3 What has become of this World of mine? I can’t recognize a thing It’s all so fast no one takes time To see what living brings No soul’s alive all are trapped on screens I don’t think I want more We all found some joy in each other’s scenes And now it’s all a bore And I speak (music) (refrain x2)
